Vice President Harris Pledges to Codify Abortion Protections at Historic Sorority Event
Vice President Harris
Vice President Harris energized supporters at a major event for the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta, pledging to secure abortion protections "when I am president." Speaking in Indianapolis at the Grand Boulé, a significant gathering for the Divine Nine sororities and fraternities, she emphasized the importance of safeguarding rights, including voting and reproductive freedoms.

"Across our nation, we are witnessing a full-on assault on hard-fought, hard-won freedoms and rights," Harris declared. "The freedom to vote. The freedom to be safe from gun violence ... The freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body and not have her government telling her what to do."
Harris argued that supporting women's autonomy over their bodies does not conflict with faith and linked the erosion of abortion rights to former President Trump, noting his deliberate selection of Supreme Court justices to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"When I am president of the United States, and when Congress passes a law to restore those freedoms, I will sign it into law," Harris promised to enthusiastic applause. "We are not playing around."
As the face of the White House's efforts to protect abortion access post-Roe v. Wade, Harris is expected to make this a cornerstone of her presidential campaign, aiming to mobilize Democratic voters. Trump, while taking credit for the court's decision, has advocated for states to individually determine their abortion laws, resulting in a patchwork of protections and bans across the country.
