Rep. Gerry Connolly Reveals Esophageal Cancer Diagnosis, Remains Optimistic

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) announced on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer but expressed optimism about his recovery.

In a letter to his constituents shared on social media, Connolly, 74, revealed that the diagnosis came as a surprise since he had only experienced occasional abdominal discomfort and had no other significant symptoms.

It was a surprise because, aside from some intermittent abdominal aches, I had no symptoms,” Connolly wrote. “Cancer can be tough. But so am I. I will face this head-on with the same resilience and humor that’s always gotten me through tough times. With the support of a great medical team, I’m confident in a successful outcome.”

Connolly, who was reelected to a ninth term with a strong victory on Tuesday, said he will begin chemotherapy and immunotherapy immediately but plans to continue serving his district both in Washington, D.C., and in Virginia.

“Over the next few months, I may experience some fatigue due to the treatment, but I will continue doing my job here in the district and on the Hill,” he wrote. “I appreciate your understanding during this time.”

He concluded by expressing his gratitude for the love and support he’s received from family, friends, and constituents, adding, “I’m full of hope and strengthened by all of you.”
