đź’‰ Ozempic May Help Boost Testosterone and Prevent ED, Study Finds

New research links popular weight-loss drugs to higher testosterone levels and improved sexual health in men with obesity or Type 2 diabetes.

GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are already known for helping with weight loss and managing Type 2 diabetes—but new research suggests they might offer an unexpected bonus for men: a boost in testosterone and reduced risk of erectile dysfunction.

A study out of St. Louis University Hospital found that men with obesity or diabetes who took GLP-1 medications saw significant increases in testosterone levels—without taking any testosterone supplements.

“This could be a game-changer in how we think about treating hormone imbalance in men with obesity,” said Dr. Shellsea Portillo Canales, the study’s lead author.

🧪 What the Study Found

Researchers tracked 110 men (average age: 54) over 18 months. All were taking GLP-1 meds and none were on testosterone therapy. By the end of the study:

  • The percentage of men with normal testosterone levels rose from 53% to 77%

  • Participants also experienced weight loss—known to be linked to better hormone function

But there are caveats: the study was retrospective, meaning it analyzed past medical records rather than running a controlled clinical trial. Plus, testosterone levels weren’t tracked after participants stopped taking the meds.

“If the weight comes back, testosterone could drop again,” Portillo told NBC News.

🧠 Why It Matters

Low testosterone is common in men with obesity and Type 2 diabetes—and it can impact everything from sexual health to energy levels, muscle mass, and bone density.

GLP-1 drugs have skyrocketed in use thanks to their effectiveness for weight control and blood sugar regulation. This new evidence, presented at the Endocrine Society’s annual conference (ENDO 2025), hints that they might be doing more under the surface than we thought.

📝 A new study suggests Ozempic and similar meds might raise testosterone in men with obesity or diabetes—potentially reducing ED risk and improving overall hormone health. More research is needed, but it’s a promising lead.
