The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) has issued a warning for cat owners to discard a specific brand of frozen pet food following a confirmed case of bird flu. The contamination, which led to the death of one indoor cat, was linked to Northwest Naturals' raw turkey recipe.

“We are confident that this cat contracted H5N1 by consuming the affected pet food,” said Ryan Scholz, State Veterinarian at ODA. “The cat had no other exposure to the virus, and genetic testing confirmed that the strain found in the pet food matched that in the cat.”

In response, Northwest Naturals voluntarily recalled its 2-pound turkey recipe raw frozen pet food sold in 12 U.S. states and Canada. The ODA reassured the public that no human cases of bird flu have been reported in connection with this incident, and the risk to humans remains low in Oregon.
