New Jersey health officials have issued a public health advisory following a confirmed case of measles in an out-of-state visitor who attended a Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium last Thursday while contagious.

The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) released a statement Tuesday urging concertgoers to be vigilant about symptoms of measles, a highly contagious virus, and to verify that they’re up to date on their measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccinations.

🚨 Who May Be at Risk?
Anyone who was at MetLife Stadium on Thursday, May 16, could have been exposed. Symptoms may develop as late as June 6, and those most at risk include individuals who are unvaccinated or have never had measles.

🩺 Measles Symptoms to Watch For:

  • High fever

  • Cough

  • Runny nose

  • Red, watery eyes

  • Rash (typically appearing 3–5 days after symptoms begin)

As of this week, no additional cases linked to the concert have been identified, but officials are closely monitoring the situation.

💉 Vaccination Urged
The NJDOH emphasized that the MMR vaccine remains the most effective protection against measles and can also prevent serious complications from the disease. The department is asking healthcare providers to check patients' vaccination status during appointments and encourage catch-up immunizations where needed.

🏥 What to Do If You May Have Been Exposed
If you think you were exposed or are experiencing symptoms, do not visit a doctor’s office or hospital without calling ahead. This precaution helps prevent further spread in healthcare settings.

“Please call your healthcare provider first so appropriate infection control measures can be taken,” the NJDOH said.

📈 Measles Cases on the Rise Nationwide
This warning comes amid a broader resurgence of measles in the U.S., with over 1,000 reported cases in 31 states so far this year. Texas is currently seeing the highest number of infections — more than 700 — primarily among unvaccinated children and teens.
