Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced this week that new federal dietary guidelines will be released next month, signaling what he called the end of the “war on saturated fats.” Speaking at the Food Allergy Fund Leadership Forum, Kennedy highlighted recent FDA initiatives under his leadership, including efforts to reduce petroleum-based food dyes and strengthen oversight of infant formula.

Kennedy said the upcoming guidelines will emphasize the role of protein and saturated fats in nutrition, a move he believes will “revolutionize the food system and food culture in this country.” Reports suggest the recommendations will encourage greater consumption of butter, cheese, milk, and red meat — a sharp departure from longstanding guidance that warns against high intake of saturated fats due to links with elevated cholesterol and heart disease risk.

Kennedy himself follows a carnivore-style diet, consisting largely of meat, poultry, eggs, seafood, dairy, and fermented foods such as yogurt, kimchi, and coleslaw. He has described the regimen as transformative for his health and energy.

The announcement is expected to spark debate among nutrition experts, many of whom continue to caution against diets high in saturated fats.
