170,000 Bottles of Martinelli’s Apple Juice Recalled Over Toxic Mold Contamination

FDA Issues Recall of Martinelli’s Apple Juice Over Mycotoxin Risk

More than 170,000 bottles of Martinelli’s apple juice are being pulled from store shelves after concerns emerged about possible contamination with patulin, a toxin classified as a mycotoxin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the recall, which was initiated by S. Martinelli & Company based in Watsonville, California.

Patulin is a naturally occurring substance produced by molds that commonly grow on apples and other fruits or grains. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), pasteurization doesn’t eliminate the toxin, allowing it to potentially remain in processed products like apple juice. Acute exposure to patulin has been linked to symptoms such as nausea, digestive issues, and vomiting.

The FDA officially labeled the recall as "Class II," which signifies that while the product may cause short-term or medically reversible health effects, the risk of severe health consequences is considered low.

The affected 10-ounce round glass bottles were distributed to 28 states, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois. These bottles carry a "best by" date of December 5, 2026, and have the UPC code “0 41244 04102 2.” A full list of batch codes tied to the recall is available on the FDA’s website.

At this time, S. Martinelli & Company has not released specific guidance on refunds or next steps for consumers. Anyone who has purchased the recalled juice is advised to stop consumption and check the batch codes for verification.
